When Touring Cars Were War

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft was the most ferocious touring car series on the planet. BMW's E30 M3 and the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II went to war on circuits across Europe, Hockenheim, Zandvoort, Donington, Nürburgring, in front of crowds that treated these machines like gladiators. Drivers like Klaus Ludwig, Johnny Cecotto, and Bernd Schneider became household names. The cars were barely disguised road cars turned into 300bhp weapons, and the racing was contact sport.
